The Basics

To start Monstrology, talk to Monstrologist Burke when you reach level 12. Monstrologist Burke is located in Ravenwood, directly in front of the Myth School. After talking to her, you will be given a quest called “Know Thine Enemy,” which has you extract a Lost Soul using your new “Extract Undead” enchantment.

To extract Animus from an enemy you have to use it just like you would use a normal enchantment.

Once you kill an enemy with the enchanted spell, you’ll get a pop up that says you’ve collected a certain amount of Animus from the enemy that you defeated. You do not have to use the extract enchanted spell to collect animus again, but you will get one bonus Animus if the hit you kill the enemy with the extract enchanted spell, which can go a long way when farming a certain enemy.

Every monster you can gather Animus for gives a little description about the monster, and they can be fun to collect and read about. Sometimes they’re even fourth wall breaking. Under the description is where your total number of Animus collected is located, and above it are three tabs.

The first tab which is automatically selected is to make a treasure card with the Animus you have collected. This treasure card works like a normal summon minion card, but will summon said enemy you’ve made a summon treasure card of.
Once summoned, it will have the enemy’s exact health, and the spells the enemy already had. If the enemy starts off with more than 1 pip, it will also copy that. However, if you summon a cheating enemy as a minion they will not keep their cheats so be aware of that.

The second tab will make a House Guest of the enemy. This takes up a slot in the pet count once placed and walks around your house like a pet. The third tab will make an Expel treasure card which will remove an enemy from a fight. You can only make Expel treasure cards of enemies that aren’t bosses.

The Expel treasure card is a single target spell that only works on the enemy that you’ve made the treasure card of, and will do damage equivalent to their health, therefore removing them from the battle.

In a battle, you can see which enemies you’ve extracted Animus from, and also how much Animus you’ve collected total. You can see an icon near the enemies health, showing you’ve collected their Animus, and also below the DRAW option on how much Animus you’ve collected. If you hover over it, you can see how much Animus from which enemy.

Besides “Extract Undead,” there are 9 other extract spells you can learn to extract different types of enemies at the time of this articles publish. Besides Undead, there are Elephants, Gobblers, Imps, Manders, Parrots, Pigs, Polar Bears, Treants, and Wyrms spells. Some species of enemies will be more common in a certain world, such as most wyrms are in Avalon, or most manders in Krokotopia, but are not limited to those worlds. Each extract enchant spell you can buy usually cost around 100,000 gold. To buy these said extract spells, you’ll have to visit Monstrologist Burke in various different worlds, such as finding Monstrologist Burke in Caliburn, Avalon, to learn “Extract Wyrm”
